THE GLOBE COMES TO YEAR 10
27th June 2024
From September to December the entirety of Year 10 meticulously studied Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’. We analysed themes of power, conflict and fear but reading and deep analysis could only get us so far, the acting of the Globe Theatre members helped bring the tales and drama of both ‘Macbeth’ and the ‘Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ alive. The interactions between the audience and the actors allowed us to become re-immersed with the detail and emotional journeys of the characters. The useful asides and academic interjections provided by the Globe Theatre provided us with an insight into the historical background as well as consolidating our previous knowledge of 'Macbeth’.
The introduction of ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ helped ease use Year 10s into the themes of the novella. The production provided a summary of the novella to ensure that we didn’t go into the performance blind-sighted as the performance stayed true to the original story. Whilst film adaptions tend to focus more on the cinematic potential for the transformation of Jekyll to Hyde instead of focusing on the original plot, the actors worked not to achieve the dramatic transformation but to capture the detective aspect of the novella.
