The Sacred Heart Language College

YEAR 8 CARNEGIE SHADOWING GROUP 2026

May - June 2026

The Carnegie Medal Shadowing Scheme is designed to inspire young people to discover and enjoy the very best in children's literature. Through shortlists selected by children's librarians, students are encouraged to read, discuss, and debate outstanding books, while taking part in a prestigious national reading event.

Sacred Heart Language College has proudly participated in the Shadowing Scheme for more than twenty years. This year, 23 Year 8 students and six members of staff took on the challenge of reading all six shortlisted books over a six-week period—an impressive achievement!

The group met weekly to discuss each book, sharing their thoughts and opinions before awarding points based on plot, character development, and overall enjoyment. These lively discussions encouraged students to think critically about literature and to appreciate a range of writing styles and themes.

At the end of the six weeks, the group selected their own overall winner. On Wednesday 24th June, students and staff met together to reveal the official Carnegie Medal winner and compare it with their own choice. There was great excitement when it was announced that both the official judges and our Shadowing Group had selected Wolf Siren by Beth O’Brien as the winning title.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in this year's Shadowing Scheme. Your commitment, enthusiasm, and thoughtful contributions made the experience a great success.
