YEAR 10 PILGRIMAGE TO ROME: A TRIP TO REMEMBER
April 2026
This year, our Year 10 students were blessed with the opportunity to embark on an unforgettable pilgrimage to Rome — a city where history, faith, and culture meet at every corner. Over the course of an inspiring and enriching week, students deepened their understanding of both ancient civilisation and the enduring traditions of the Catholic Church.
Walking Through History
One of the most striking aspects of the trip was the chance to step back in time and explore some of the world’s most iconic ancient sites. Students were in awe as they visited the majestic Colosseum, imagining the crowds and spectacles that once filled this enormous amphitheatre. A walk through the Roman Forum brought history to life, as guides explained how this area served as the political and social heart of ancient Rome.
The visit to the Pantheon was equally memorable. Standing beneath its vast dome — still the largest unreinforced concrete dome in the world — students marvelled at the ingenuity of Roman engineering and reflected on how spaces like this have been adapted across time for Christian worship.
Discovering Hidden Treasures of Faith
While the famous landmarks were a highlight, the group also discovered some of Rome’s more hidden spiritual gems. A visit to the Basilica of San Clemente offered a unique insight into layers of history, with students descending through centuries — from a 12th-century church to a 4th-century basilica and even ancient Roman buildings below.
Another special experience was climbing the steps to Santa Maria in Aracoeli, a beautiful basilica rich in history and devotion. These quieter, less crowded sites provided space for reflection and prayer, helping students connect more personally with the faith heritage of the Church.
A particularly moving visit was to the Scala Santa (Holy Stairs). According to tradition, these are the very steps that Christ ascended on His way to trial before Pontius Pilate. In a powerful act of devotion, all students took part in the tradition of ascending the stairs on their knees, pausing for prayer and reflection along the way. This deeply spiritual experience allowed students to connect with Christ’s suffering in a profound and personal way, making it one of the most memorable moments of the pilgrimage.
A Truly Special Moment: Palm Sunday with the Pope
The spiritual highlight of the trip came when students attended Palm Sunday Mass in St Peter’s Square, celebrated by Pope Leo. Surrounded by thousands of pilgrims from across the world, our students were part of a truly universal Church gathering. To hear, first hand, his message of peace for the world was truly inspiring.
Receiving the Pope’s blessing was a deeply moving experience for everyone present. It was a powerful reminder of unity in faith and will surely remain a cherished memory for life.
Evenings in the Eternal City
Beyond the organised visits, the group also enjoyed exploring the lively streets of Rome each evening. Strolling through the city as the sun set, students experienced Rome in a different light — vibrant, welcoming, and full of charm.
Particular highlights included visiting the Spanish Steps, where students gathered to take in the atmosphere, and enjoying well-earned gelato at the Trevi Fountain. Throwing coins into the fountain and making wishes became a joyful tradition, marking the fun and friendship shared throughout the week.
Lasting Memories
This trip to Rome was far more than a sightseeing tour — it was a journey of faith, history, and personal growth. Students returned home with a deeper appreciation of the Catholic heritage of our college community, stronger friendships, and memories that will stay with them for years to come.
We are grateful to all staff who made this trip possible and to our students, who represented the school with enthusiasm, respect, and curiosity throughout the trip.
Roma has truly left its mark on all of us.
