VE DAY CELEBRATIONS

8th May 2025

On Tuesday 6th May we were invited to help the History Department celebrate VE day. We helped bake and decorate over 100 cupcakes to sell for the History Departments' VE day celebrations. On Wednesday at breaktime, we helped organise the cake sale and sold our cakes for charity. They looked delicious and sold really quickly! Some Year 7’s also kindly brought in cakes too. We helped decorate the school with lots of handmade red, white and blue bunting and paper chains.

Additionally, as part of the celebrations, we have learned more about wartime Britain in our classes. This week, years 7,8 and 9 History classes got to experience what games children in wartime Britain would have played. We thought about all the electronic devices that we have today which children in the 1940’s wouldn’t have had and discussed the importance of children playing games to entertain themselves. We really enjoyed playing outdoor games with skipping ropes and hula hoops and used our creativity to improvise new games with these items. We also learnt about games which children would have played quietly in air raid shelters to occupy the time, such as picking up sticks, jacks and tiddlywinks. We all particularly liked the card game Happy Families. We really enjoyed being part of the 80 years VE day celebration and would like to thank Mrs Conti, the Head of History, for all her time organising this memorable day.
