MATHS TALK SMOKE RING CIRCLES

23rd of April 2025
Today, all Y9 had a Maths Talk, it was evident that everyone, including me, enjoyed it very much. The teacher, Ms Zoe Griffith, was a very enthusiastic presenter and demonstrator and a great mathematician too. She gave us numerous examples of how we use Maths daily and how fun it can be. One of the examples I loved the most was the smoke rings. She used a cylindrical cannon and punched it from behind to make a smoke ring that flew across the room. Last term, we celebrated Pi Day on the 14th March, so our teacher's theme was circles. We learnt that the doughnut shape is a mathematical shape called a Torus. We also discovered that Mt Etna in Italy produced smoke rings due to chemical reactions. As part of a loop activity, our teacher cut the shape and turned it into different ones. Overall, my peers and I greatly enjoyed the experience and thank Ms Griffith!
