The Sacred Heart Language College

Curriculum Overview

The Curriculum at The Sacred Heart

We are committed to offering a high quality broad and balanced educational offer to all our students.  At its heart is the belief that a raised set of expectations enables our students to aim high and challenge themselves in their learning.  Therefore all students follow the full range of subjects.  Particular support is given in class and through targeted interventions for those pupils who need to improve their basic literacy and numeracy in order to fully access the learning opportunities across the rest of the curriculum.

We firmly believe that if the foundations of learning are properly established then academic success and high levels of achievement will follow by the end of Key Stage 4.  This commitment is evidenced in our curriculum plan where time is given to promoting learning skills and approaches to study in Years 7 and 8 (Foundation Learning), preparation for GCSE across Years 9 and 10 and a real focus on academic excellence and transition to further sixth form studies in Year 11.

In Years 10 & 11 the curriculum is markedly different to years 7-9, with some elements of choice afforded to students.

  • Science (GCSE)
  • RE (GCSE)
  • A Modern Language (GCSE)
  • PE (non-exam)
  • Citizenship (non-exam)
  • Work-related Learning (non-exam)

There are also option subjects available (30% of curriculum time) which are chosen from the list below:

  • Additional Modern Language (GCSE)
  • Art and Design (GCSE)
  • Business Studies
  • Computer Science
  • Design and Technology - Food, Graphics, Product Design, Textiles  (GCSE)
  • Drama (GCSE)
  • Geography (GCSE)
  • History (GCSE)
  • Music (GCSE)
  • PE (GCSE)
  • Health & Social Care (BTEC)
  • Triple Science (GCSE)

The school gives a lot of guidance to students about choosing subjects for year 10 classes including providing a curriculum brochure and running a Curriculum Evening in February and a Parents' Evening in March each year.
