Catholic Social Teaching Assemblies

7A began for this half-term by presenting on the theme of Care for Creation. Pope Francis has said that the environment and its resources were not a commodity to be used and exploited, but something to be used sustainably. The class gathered together to look at key aspects within the topic, and in their own time they conducted research. The girls were passionate about the many environmental issues and were enthusiastic about their approach to the challenge of presenting to the lower school, a feat I am sure you could appreciate the difficulty of doing for many of the Year 7s. Background to the topic, the challenge presented by it, role model stewards and some ways in which our own individual behaviour could be changed were a focus of the assembly. Students also looked at some of the worst offenders, one of which being Taylor Swift who with her private jet use, was estimated to have produced 8,000–8,300 tons of carbon dioxide in 2022. The average person in the UK takes up around 10 tons of carbon dioxide per year. This gave students an opportunity to consider the way in which the rich, famous and powerful have an overall larger footprint on the environment.
With over half the class speaking, they should be proud of the way in which they prepared diligently and worked cohesively. They gave up breaks and lunchtimes in order to ensure that the presentation went off without a hitch. Hopefully, students were able to reflect on the multi-faceted challenge that environmental stewardship brings, as well as consider how they could best care for the world around them.
Mr. Franks - 7A Form Tutor
7A's assembly focused on Care for God's creation. We worked as a team to include everyone's ideas and thoughts for our Powerpoint which was about amazing stewards who helped us to have a better planet for future generations. We also included in our Powerpoint the main causes/issues around climate change, as we all took turns to read. Some of us felt nervous, but some felt confident to read. Overall, I think our assembly was a show of 7A's amazing teamwork, as I am sure the rest of the class will agree.
