YEAR 10 ROME PILGRIMAGE: A JOURNEY OF FAITH, HISTORY AND HOPE

Friday 11th July - Monday 14th July

This summer, students from Year 10 at The Sacred Heart Language College embarked on a truly unforgettable pilgrimage to Rome — a city steeped in faith, history, and beauty. As part of our school’s Catholic ethos and cultural enrichment, the trip offered a unique blend of spiritual encounters and cultural discovery.

One of the most profound moments of the pilgrimage was celebrating Mass at the magnificent St Peter’s Basilica, the heart of the Catholic Church. Sitting with fellow pilgrims from all over the world beneath its awe-inspiring dome and joining in the Eucharist in such a sacred space deepened our sense of community and faith. Later, gathered in St Peter’s Square, we were privileged to receive a papal blessing from Pope Leo, streamed live from the Pope's summer residence, Castel Gandolfo. Though virtual, the moment was deeply moving, connecting us with the global Church in prayer and unity.

As this year marks the Jubilee Year of the Pilgrims of Hope, we were honoured to pass through the Holy Doors at both St Peter’s Basilica and St John Lateran, the Pope’s cathedral church. The tradition of walking through these doors — open only during Jubilee years — symbolises a journey of spiritual renewal and a commitment to living lives of mercy and grace.

Each day brought new discoveries, from ancient ruins to Renaissance art. We wandered the mighty Colosseum, imagined the life of ancient Romans in the Roman Forum, and marvelled at the grandeur of Rome’s many churches. Our tour also took us to the lively Spanish Steps and the world-famous Trevi Fountain, where students eagerly enjoyed delicious gelato while taking in the scene.

Evenings were a chance to experience Rome’s vibrant culture. A particularly memorable night was spent in the enchanting Piazza Navona, soaking up the atmosphere of live music, artists, and the golden glow of Roman twilight. It was a joyful reminder that beauty and creativity are also part of our pilgrimage.

Another special highlight was our visit to the Pantheon, where an art installation created for the Jubilee of Hope offered a striking visual reflection on the hope of redemption through Christ’s suffering. The light filtering through the oculus in the dome seemed to echo the message of hope that defines this Jubilee year — a call to trust in God’s love even in times of darkness.

This trip was more than a tour; it was a journey of the heart. As pilgrims, not just tourists, we returned home with memories, friendships, and a deeper connection to our faith. We are truly grateful for the opportunity and the teachers who made this experience possible.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him.” – Romans 15:13
