The Sacred Heart Language College

year 9 trip to north London collegiate school

Thursday 5th June

On Thursday 5th June, a group of Year 9 students had the exciting opportunity to take part in a philosophy partnership day with North London Collegiate School (NLCS). The aim of the day was to strengthen our skills in evaluating philosophical arguments, drawing independent conclusions, and collaborating effectively under academic conditions.

We were placed into mixed groups of SHLC and NLCS girls to encourage teamwork and new friendships. The day began with the thought-provoking question: What makes humans human? Using both physical and psychological perspectives, we built persuasive arguments, using premises and conclusions to explore what truly defines humanity.

After lunch, each group was given a different source to study, tasked with creating a presentation that reflected their source’s beliefs. The central question of the afternoon was: Is it reasonable to believe in life after death? Drawing on the ideas of key philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, and Richard Dawkins, we examined different views of the universe and the human soul. Discussions included dualist and materialist perspectives, as well as arguments involving near-death experiences and the concept of resurrection. Overall, the day was a memorable and enriching experience. Not only did it allow us to stretch our academic thinking, but it also fostered new friendships and a deeper appreciation of life’s biggest questions.
